About The New Virgin Forest

In Central Europe, The New Virgin Forest is a unique project, which has been created near Ještěd in northern Bohemia. Since 2004, the non-profit organization Čmelák - Society of Friends of Nature has been transforming spruce monocultures into a full-fledged colorful forest that is lush, diverse and full of life. The forest as it should be.

Previously, only spruces grew on the lands of the New Forest. Fifty years ago, they were planted here by man and created an artificial spruce monoculture. Apart from moss and needles, you didn't find much there. You could say it was such a spruce desert. By transforming these forests, Čmelák restores the species diversity of plants and animals; in addition, the newly created mixed forest is better able to retain water in the landscape and also withstand various calamities, such as bark beetles.
